More Great Efforts in Response to the Oil Crisis

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Last week, we blogged about the National Wildlife Federation (NWF)—an organization that is working tirelessly to reverse the effects of the disastrous oil spill. As mentioned, one easy way to make a difference is to select NWF as a supported cause in your GlobalMojo browser.

Another option is to head down to the Gulf yourself!

CNN has rounded up several organizations—including NWF—that are actively recruiting volunteers to take part in restoration efforts. These organizations include:

· The Audubon Society

· The Nature Conservancy

· Alabama Coastal Foundation

· Mobile Baykeeper

· Save Our Seabirds

· Greater New Orleans Foundation

· Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana

· United Way

Check out the article for additional organizations, descriptions of their efforts and contact information. It’s a great resource for anybody looking to volunteer on the ground.

Can’t make it down to the Gulf, but still want to help?

Consider adding any one of the organizations listed above as a supported cause in your GlobalMojo browser at http://globalmojo.com/causes/search. Every time you browse the Internet, you will be generating revenue for organizations responding to the crisis.

Gulf Oil Crisis: Make a Difference by Supporting the National Wildlife Federation

Gulf Oil Crisis: Make a Difference by Supporting the National Wildlife Federation

Since last April’s devastating oil spill, several millions of gallons of oil have already leaked into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil—estimated to be escaping at between 20,000 and 40,000 gallons a day—poses a substantial environmental threat to the beaches, wetlands and wildlife populations in the region. Every day, the growing spread of oil puts hundreds of species of fish, marine mammals and birds at greater and greater risk.

How can you help?

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is the largest non-profit conservation education and advocacy organization in the United States. For over 70 years, NWF has worked to reverse global warming, restore clean water, conserve natural resources and protect wildlife populations.

In the current crisis, teams of NWF experts are working on the ground in the Gulf to assess the impact of the disaster on local marshes and wetlands. In partnership with industry representatives, local nonprofits and government agencies, NWF is also organizing on-the-ground volunteer operations. Please consider supporting NWF’s ongoing efforts by making a much needed financial contribution at http://nwf.org.

You can also make a positive difference by choosing the National Wildlife Federation as a supported cause in your GlobalMojo browser. Just visit http://globalmojo.com/nwf.

Magnify this impact by inviting friends and family to support alongside you! Go to http://globalmojo.com/tellafriend/index to learn how.

Thanks for your support and for continuing to browse with purpose!

Oscar Nod for Featured Cause Oceanic Preservation Society Documentary!

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The Academy Awards are coming up soon, and it’s easy to get caught up in wondering who will have the most notable acceptance speech or what the stars will be wearing. However, this world-famous event also presents an opportunity to recognize people who work tirelessly, at times at great personal risk, to protect the world’s fragile ecosystems and the defenseless creatures that inhabit them.

“The Cove,” a documentary film sponsored by featured cause Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS), has earned rave reviews, sparked considerable controversy, and has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Feature Documentary at the March 7th Academy Awards. “The Cove” tells the amazing true story of how a former dolphin trainer, a team of activists, and filmmakers embarked on a dangerous covert mission to expose a brutal dolphin hunt driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat.

They travel to Taiji, Japan, a town that appears to be devoted to the wonders and mysteries of the sleek, playful dolphins and whales that swim off their coast.  But in a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by barbed wire and “Keep Out” signs, lies a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, where the fishermen of Taiji engage in an unseen hunt.  The nature of what they do is so chilling — and the consequences are so dangerous to human health — they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing it.

“The Cove” exposes the horrible truth of what’s really going on in the cove and why it matters to everyone in the world. This Oscar nomination is well deserved, and hopefully OPS will take home the golden statue for Best Feature Documentary. You can learn more about “The Cove” at the film’s web site and at the Oceanic Preservation Society web site. You can also add OPS as one of your GlobalMojo favorite causes and help save dolphins and other marine life by making a donation directly to OPS.

By now everyone has heard about the disaster in Haiti—last Tuesday’s devastating earthquake has left the city in ruins and countless survivors in critical need of food, medical treatment, and shelter. Nations around the globe are mobilizing relief efforts, but will take some time to arrive. We want to tell the GlobalMojo community about several opportunities to help the people of Haiti.

Oxfam America, one of GlobalMojo’s featured causes, is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Oxfam America already has 200 staff members in Haiti, working hard to support the millions of people impacted by the Haiti earthquake. We encourage you to consider making a financial donation to help the Haiti earthquake victims at www.oxfamamerica.org.

Our friends at Free The Children also have a Haiti relief fund, which will provide emergency relief and medical supplies and rebuild vital infrastructure. You have the choice of donating in American or Canadian dollars at www.freethechildren.com.

Of course, you can also support Oxfam and Free The Children’s efforts year-round by adding them as supported causes in your GlobalMojo browser at http://globalmojo.com/OxfamAmerica and http://globalmojo.com/FreeTheChildren.
